The Silent Auction proceeds will go to support the 2010 student fashion show, Pour l’Amour, April 10th. No RSVP necessary to attend. Auction items include glass blown art, gift certificates to Anchor Tattoo, Belltown Ballet, IDOL Salon, Calidora Spa, and many more!

Fall Flashback will celebrate art, music, and fashion (duh) this Sunday, November 8th at the Ballard Art Church with a little bit of a proclaimed “East Coast flair”. The show will feature live music by the Dirty Change Ups, fashion by Belltown clothier, Monica Gutweis and headlining the event is Seattle Art Museum’s Masquerade Costume Design Competition winner, Anna Dicklhuber and her three piece costume series (one of which is inspired by Cai Guo-Qiang’s Inopportune car explosion installation) that will also feature platform hair and make-up, i.e. styling that is done live and on stage. A little hint: the costume may involve projecting light rods from the rear and bust of the garment… just sayin’.

In true West Coast style, this event is stripping away all barriers of exclusivity and getting it’s “do-gooder” on by making the event free and donating all profits from their raffle to Art Corps for kids.

Just look for the orange sign displaying a witch and other Halloween-y graphics identifying participating businesses.  Please, only costumed kids ages 12 and under.  And parents, please accompany small children.  Even if you’re too old to ask for candy, come down and enjoy the creative and hilarious pirates, Wild Things monsters, and ham-and-cheese sandwiches running around Ballard!

Venues include staples like the Sunset and the Tractor Tavern, as well as more unexpected spots like Volterra and the New York Fashion Academy.  Shows start as early as 3pm, depending on the venue, with some acts beginning as late as midnight.  There is enough variety for almost any musical taste, from hip hop to jazz to roots to rock and everything in between.  Each location will showcase one genre throughout the night, so you can stick around and listen to hours of your favorite music, or hop around to hear a mix of local artists.  The wristband allows entrance to all venues.  See a complete line-up here.

In addition to the music, there will be a debate between mayoral candidates Mike McGinn and Joe Mallahan at the Conor Byrne at 8:30pm.

With a rotating list of featured artists every month, most from the Northwest region, as well as local clothing designers, she has helped expose many to these talented  individuals in one convenient location.

My daughter and I stopped into Me ‘N Moms this morning to look around and I saw a sign for Tuesdays in Ballard.  Throughout the summer I have noticed the posters in shop windows and restaurants but strangely the signs tell little of what the event is about.  After doing a bit of asking around I found that it is a promotion, sponsored by the In Ballard Merchants Association, that is intended to drive business into the neighborhood on an otherwise slow day.  Many shops and restaurants participate by offering discounts or other perks.  Me ‘N Moms was discounting summer merchandise by 20% for today only.  Today is the second to last Tuesday of the event.  If you’re looking for something to do on a drizzly afternoon in Ballard, check out the website and see if anything strikes your fancy.

I hope everyone is enjoying this HOT weather we’re having! I’m sitting here in my office with the window open and I’m still sweltering!

I just wanted to send a quick update on the next East Ballard Community Association event on  Tuesday August 4th. There’s a big event in Seattle called “Night Out”, which is sponsored by the Seattle Police Department. All of citizens of Seattle (actually the whole nation) is allowed to close down their block for free for a community get together on that night. The East Ballard Community Association is here to help you get your block party started! Although West Seattle and other locales have been running edible garden tours for some time, this year marks the first ever Ballard Edible Garden Tour.   The tour is sponsored by Sustainable Ballard and Groundswell NW.  One of the key individuals responsible for getting this off the ground is Ingela Warnerstrand from Sustainable Ballard.  This spring I wrote a post about free gardening classes at the Loyal Heights Community Center and Ingela was the teacher.

This tour will encourage your ‘inner gardener’ and show you what grows successfully here in Ballard and how to get creative with small spaces, growing items in pots and parking strips, etc.  If you have always been intrigued by growing your own food, but didn’t know where to start, this tour will allow you to ask questions of gardeners who have experienced success and failures and are happy to share their hard won gardening wisdom.
