Fall Flashback will celebrate art, music, and fashion (duh) this Sunday, November 8th at the Ballard Art Church with a little bit of a proclaimed “East Coast flair”. The show will feature live music by the Dirty Change Ups, fashion by Belltown clothier, Monica Gutweis and headlining the event is Seattle Art Museum’s Masquerade Costume Design Competition winner, Anna Dicklhuber and her three piece costume series (one of which is inspired by Cai Guo-Qiang’s Inopportune car explosion installation) that will also feature platform hair and make-up, i.e. styling that is done live and on stage. A little hint: the costume may involve projecting light rods from the rear and bust of the garment… just sayin’.

In true West Coast style, this event is stripping away all barriers of exclusivity and getting it’s “do-gooder” on by making the event free and donating all profits from their raffle to Art Corps for kids.

Competitors were asked to design and produce costumes inspired by  works of art from the Seattle Art Museum. Dicklhuber’s inspirations were a Jipae Mask, Cai Guo-Qiang’s Inopportune car explosion installation and Roy Lichtenstein’s Red Painting.

First runner up, Jason Arrington, featured a piece based off of Joan of Arc. Arrington  is also a student at New York Fashion Academy.

With a rotating list of featured artists every month, most from the Northwest region, as well as local clothing designers, she has helped expose many to these talented  individuals in one convenient location.

As an all day promotion, she will be offering a free pair of Sock it to Me socks with every $25 purchase, as well as a promise of cake.  Monster Art & Clothing is located on the corner of Ballard Ave. and 20th.

Bop Street Records is Ballard’s finest unofficial museum. This giant emporium of records captures an essential element of music history and culture. Upon walking through the door the smell of the thousands of old records will flood you with nostalgia. The helpful and knowledgeable staff aide you in your search for whatever music your heart desires, be it obscure 45’s, or a popular record you lost 20 years ago. Bop Street’s two floors of records have entertained many famous guests looking to improve their vinyl libraries.

Another exciting element of Bop Street is their recent addition of live music. Often on weekends customers can come shop for records while hearing great local bands. I have been able to attend a few of these charming events. They are always free, so you can spend your money on records (of course). Bop Street Records is located at 5219 Ballard Ave NW.

“The Hall of Justice” as it was most recently dubbed, is perhaps one of Ballard’s least known historical landmarks. Originally a small grocery store, the now dilapidated building on 4230 Leary Way has been a recording studio for the past few decades. First called Triangle Studios, then most notably, Reciprocal Recordings, the space has seen the likes of Nirvana, Mudhoney, Modest Mouse, and Death Cab for Cutie (to name a few). The building is now mostly vacant aside from rats and old speaker cabinets. Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie was the last recording engineer to lease the space before moving his studio to Portland. The building is unlikely to stay standing for much longer, so go take a peak at it while you still can.

We hear that this month the new gourmet ice cream truck, Parfait will be right nearby and if you buy $40 or more at Venue, you’ll get a free single scoop! Sweet. Especially since Venue already has the most swinging artwalk with cool music, interesting people, great art and the best complimentary snacks. And don’t forget Seattle’s only Art-o-Mat machine – a refurbished cigarette machine that dispenses art from all over the world in handy little packages for $5.

We love wandering Ballard on artwalk evenings, seeing the streets full of people. There’s just such a great vibe. You can go can a drink at the new Bastille restaurant which has such a great ambience in its big open space, not to mention the more hidden back bar and beautiful outdoor patio. Then pop in and out of stops on the artwalk map. We love Market Street Shoes (what’s better than shoes AND art?!), linger by the windows at Annie’s Art and Frame, and then head down into old Ballard, I hear they have art and a guest aerialist at Monster Art & Clothing. And when you finally make your way home filled with art and culture, don’t forget to stop by Ballard’s new Bodega, Snacks for that quart of milk you’ll need for breakfast.

Its a wonderful idea that there’s a locally owned retail shop that has a monthly rotating list of artists.  On the 8th, Monster Art & Clothing will host artist Kelly Patton for the month of August. According to her bio:

I grew up in Colorado where I earned my BFA at Colorado State and graduated in summer 2005. Immediately after graduating from college, I moved out to Seattle to search out my future under the canopy of dark clouds and large trees. My change of environment and occupation as an artist has led me to experiment with many different mediums, but my main focus has been in watercolor.

Her art is very whimsical, and contain a childlike appeal with adult sensibilities, evoking a Lewis Carroll quality.

If you’re in the Ballard neighborhood on August 8th, there will be a reception for her at Monster during the Ballard Art Walk, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  Although if you’re not around, you can view her gallery here.  There will be music, catered food, and an aerialist.  Really.  If you wonder how anyone can have an aerialist in a small shop, here’s why:

Its because they have a functioning trapeze built into the ceiling.  That is probably the awesomest thing I’ve seen in a retail store, next to a little girl accusing her grandmother of farting.

Since its about a week away, plan a trip on making it to the Artwalk.
