Ballard Art Walk: Silent Auction and Holiday Party at NYFA

Come support local fashion, shop for the holidays and enjoy complimentary drinks and appetizers at the New York Fashion Academy’s annual Silent Auction and Holiday Party on Ballard Art walk night, Saturday, November 14th.

The Silent Auction proceeds will go to support the 2010 student fashion show, Pour l’Amour, April 10th. No RSVP necessary to attend. Auction items include glass blown art, gift certificates to Anchor Tattoo, Belltown Ballet, IDOL Salon, Calidora Spa, and many more!

Make-up, wardrobe, hairstyling… it’s all a part of the backstage insanity at any given fashion event— But not for this fashion show. The make-up artists and hairstyling gurus that make up Katwalk Productions, Seattle’s newest edition to the uprise of DIY, rogue-ish fashion groups, are ditching the backstage and taking over the runway. Literally.

Fall Flashback will celebrate art, music, and fashion (duh) this Sunday, November 8th at the Ballard Art Church with a little bit of a proclaimed “East Coast flair”. The show will feature live music by the Dirty Change Ups, fashion by Belltown clothier, Monica Gutweis and headlining the event is Seattle Art Museum’s Masquerade Costume Design Competition winner, Anna Dicklhuber and her three piece costume series (one of which is inspired by Cai Guo-Qiang’s Inopportune car explosion installation) that will also feature platform hair and make-up, i.e. styling that is done live and on stage. A little hint: the costume may involve projecting light rods from the rear and bust of the garment… just sayin’.

In true West Coast style, this event is stripping away all barriers of exclusivity and getting it’s “do-gooder” on by making the event free and donating all profits from their raffle to Art Corps for kids.

NYFA Student, AnnaDicklhuber, Wins Seattle Art Museum Costume Competition

Anna Dicklhuber, a fashion student at Ballard’s own New York Fashion Academy won 1st place in the Seattle Art Museum’s Masquarade costume design competition, hosted at the Pacific Place mall last Saturday. Her winning pieces will be displayed on the 7th avenue window of Pacific Place mall for three months starting this Sunday.

Competitors were asked to design and produce costumes inspired by works of art from the Seattle Art Museum. Dicklhuber’s inspirations were a Jipae Mask, Cai Guo-Qiang’s Inopportune car explosion installation and Roy Lichtenstein’s Red Painting.

First runner up, Jason Arrington, featured a piece based off of Joan of Arc. Arrington is also a student at New York Fashion Academy.

Jewtopia Coming to Seattle

The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle will host an evening of uproarious laughter, delectable desserts and community fun for their annual Community Celebration and Campaign Kick-off, September 16 at Benaroya Hall (I know, NOT Ballard, but they’re are Jews in Ballard, right? And people that dig comedy, right?).

The Federation’s Campaign Kick-off will feature the hilarious comedy act, World of Jewtopia, and a dessert reception. Tickets are just $36.

World of Jewtopia is a one-act show starring Bryan and Sam that combines scenes from their original show Jewtopia, re-enactments from their bestselling book, “Jewtopia: The Chosen Book for the Chosen People”, interactive audience participation (i.e. the Jewish “Apollo”), stand-up comedy, and a dazzling multimedia presentation for an funny, one-of-a-kind-event.

Fabric Sale Next Sunday

All kinds of fabric, from bridal to vintage, will be on sale at the New York Fashion Academy on Ballard Avenue, next Sunday, August 30th from 10-2pm.

Bolts of one of a kind, surplus fabric from local designers will be available for sale on the main floor of the school. Prices are cheap for hard to find (in Seattle) fibers like cashmere, crepes and silk organza. This sale will be a reoccuring event, hosted at the school every other Sunday, starting on the 30th.

Olsen’s Scandinavian Foods on Market Street will close after 49 years of business in Ballard. Olsen’s attempted to sell within the family, but to no avail. The destination storefront for hard to find Scandinavian foods and other randoms is in the process of complete liquidation.

Olsen’s Scandinavian Foods is of three recent Market Street retailers who are closing their doors forever, along with Epilogue Books and Best Regards.

CD Release Party – Red, White and Brew at the Bit

Seattle’s rising stars of rock and roll, Neon Nights and the Valkyries, are hosting a CD release/ kick-off party for their Red, White and Brew tour at the Bit Saloon on Saturday night.

Neon Nights (all dudes) and the Valkyries (all chicks) are both bands that embrace classic punk themes: loud, fast and gritty, and 80′s metal motifs– each fronted by vocalists that couldn’t have been created better by the gods of rock themselves. Stevie Barile, left, of the Valkyries, is everything that makes for a legend… a voice like a chainsaw, destructive stage behavior and party animal tendencies.

$7 buys you a glimpse of Seattle’s baddest punk music and a punch in the face. They’re live performances are guaranteed to leave you with bruises and war wounds of rock.

Bayonet, a loud, 70′s inspired rock band will be playing tomorrow night at the Sunset Tavern. Self described as “lush” and “epic in nature”, Bayonet first debuted at Ballard’s underground venue, The Josephine, with The Drug Purse and KHV. After a warm welcome, they have begun recording and booking shows throughout Seattle. Catch them tomorrow for only $6 at the Sunset.

Ballgowns on Ballard Art Walk

This coming Saturday on Ballard Art Walk night, consider a visit to the New York Fashion Academy to witness the culmination of blood, sweat and lots of tears– aka the student Ballgown Presentation.

Rosie Kohlmeier, 1st place winner of Project Red Dress, and Mike Jolley of Legacy (see below design sketch), will present their completed ballgowns on the runway as Dr. Robert Whaley, NYFA provost, will publicly inspect the student’s gowns in front of an open audience.

Ballgown construction is one of the final requisites of the NYFA Design and Construction Certificate Program curriculum. Students must submit a sketch design of a formal ballgown (to include a 14″ train and sleeves to cover the armpit), draft the pattern and construct the garment (first out of muslin and then out of the final fabric) within 30 days to pass the course.
